The struggle to live with elephants…
Botswana is a country in the south of the African
continent. Neighboring Zimbabwe , Angola , Zambia and
South Africa, the country has suddenly come to the center of the world. It
is surprising to know that the economy of this country with a population of
only 2 million is dependent on hunting, and that hunting is not of small
animals, but of elephants. (Elephants)
After independence, Botswana, which was under the British
rule, tried to improve its economic system like other African countries. But
the country has to face two crises, falling GDP per capita and increasing
elephant population. Elephants are abundant in this country. Then Botswana
began to invite Western countries to hunt these elephants. They were
allowed to hunt elephants, charging a hefty fee. (Elephants)
This not only improved their economy but also helped the
country to some extent in curbing the growing number of elephants. But the
elephant poaching in Botswana has been criticized from all over the world as an
abominable incident. Britain and Germany publicly criticized Botswana. Also,
Botswana demanded that Germany stop this hunting immediately. The president of
Botswana has shown a mirror to this German tic.
Because most poachers from Germany are going to Botswana to
hunt elephants. Moreover, the number of elephants in this small country has
increased to such an extent that every day some people are dying under the feet
of elephants. In such a case, we give 20 thousand elephants to Germany as a
gift, the president of Botswana, Mokgwetsi Masisi, has made a public appeal
that they should live with the elephants. Moreover, this country has also
spoken harsh words to Britain, which is ruling Botswana. (Elephants)
Botswana, a country with a population of only 20 million
people, has suddenly started gaining global fame. The reason for this is that
the president of Botswana, Mokgwetsi Masisi, has directly threatened Germany.
Don't meddle in our country's affairs or send 20 thousand elephants to your
country. Behind this threat by Mokgwetsi is the advice given by Germany.
Elephants are publicly poached in Botswana. For this, hunters come charging
huge fees. Germany demanded that all this should be stopped. Enraged by that,
Botswana has presented the information to the world about the increasing number
of these elephants and the suffering they are causing to this small
country.
Botswana is home to one-third of the world's elephant
population. The number of elephants here is more than 130 thousand. The
population of this country is 2 million. It is more in proportion to them. If
we talk about India, this ratio is 4 times more than the population
of elephants in India. Due to the growing number of these elephants, elephant
poaching is encouraged in Botswana. Therefore, Germany demanded an immediate
stop to this hunt.
The president of Botswana, Mokgwetsi Masisi, threatened to
send 20,000 elephants to Germany. Moreover, the people of Germany should also
experience living together with elephants . Also, rather than giving us
advice, accept our gift lovingly, we will not listen to it. The
number of elephants in Botswana continues to grow. Therefore, agriculture in
this country is in danger. Moreover, every day citizens are dying here at the
feet of elephants. The proportion of children is significant. That's why
students from Western countries are called to hunt elephants in African
countries including Botswana. For this, the government here charges thousands
of dollars in fees from the hunters. This money is used for the
conservation of elephants and health services for local citizens.
(Elephants)
Just like Germany criticized Botswana, Britain also
criticized it in 2019 . Botswana's wildlife minister
Mithimkhulu suggested to Britain that we send 10,000 elephants to Hyde
Park in London so that the people there would also know what it's like to live
with elephants . The demand was subsequently banished from
Britain. Currently, the economy of Botswana depends on the
poaching of these elephants. Now, along with this country, countries like
Zimbabwe and Namibia have also sought permission to sell elephant tusks .
A quota is now set annually for elephant poaching in
Botswana. A few years ago, Botswana gave 8,000
elephants to the neighboring country of Angola to control the number
of elephants in the country . Apart from this, hundreds of elephants have
been given to Mozambique. Hunters from European countries come in large numbers
to hunt elephants in Botswana. These hunters take a part of their body with
them as a trophy after hunting elephants. These are probably the elephant's
teeth. That is called trophy hunting.

According to a 2021 report by Humane Society International,
Germany ranks first in the entire European Union in importing hunting trophies.
Botswana banned trophy hunting in 2014 due to increasing ticks
. But as the number of elephants has crossed one lakh, this ban was lifted
in 2019 and hunting of elephants has been given free rein.
