'This' Prime Minister of Pakistan presented an anti-Hindu budget in India
Liaquat Ali Khan became the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Before that, he held the post of Finance Minister of India in the Interim Government formed under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In the year 1946, the Thanji Budget was introduced and it was called the Socialist Budget. But his budget was said to be anti-Hindu because of the gross tax. (Pakistan PM)
He was the greatest
Muslim League leader after Jinnah. So Jinnah gave him a place in the
interim government as a representative of the Muslim League. He presented
the first budget as the Finance Minister of India in the old Parliament
House. who were said to be socialists. Due to his budget, businessmen
became angry. They felt that their business was going to come to a
standstill. A profit of Rs 1 lakh was taxed at 25 percent. Corporate
tax was doubled. Along with this, some other taxes were introduced in the
budget. He also announced the formation of a commission against tax
evaders in his budget speech.
Veteran leaders like
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel believed that this budget was anti-Hindu. He also
said that this is a deliberate step. But at that time the industry was
dominated by Hindus. These were Parsi businessmen like Tata and
Godrej. Only the sole pharmaceutical company Cipla was owned by a Muslim
family. Its founder was KA Hamid. At that time industrialists like
Ghanshyam Das Birla, Jaman Lal Bajaj had good relations with the
Congress. Those people also felt that the interests of the industry were
neglected in the budget. Birla and Bajaj were close associates of Mahatma
Gandhi. Whenever needed, these people used to help financially for the
freedom movement.
Liaquat Ali Khan, as
the finance minister, was accused of delaying the decision in the case of Hindu
ministers. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patle, as the Home Minister, had asserted
that not even a single employee would be appointed without the permission of
Liaquat Ali Khan. At that time even Liaquat Ali Khan's party created
atmosphere and said that they cannot be anti-Muslim. Because his Begum was
originally a Hindu. No one could have guessed the subtleties of the budget
because the budget document had reached the parliament building directly from
his home. (Pakistan PM)
When was the first
budget of independent India presented?
The first budget of
independent India was presented on 26 November 1947, which was in a way a mere
formality. It did not provide for any new tax. This was done as the
regular budget of the government of independent India was due in just a few
months. Liaquat Ali Khan was born on 1 October 1895 in Karnal, Haryana into
a royal family. A BSc-LLB from Aligarh Muslim University and LLM from
Oxford, Liaquat Ali Khan chose advocacy as his profession and at the same time
approached the Muslim League to try his hand at politics.
After becoming the
first Prime Minister of Pakistan,
he also came here when his family got property in Muzaffarnagar,
UP. Liaquat Ali Khan also contested from here and became an MLA in the
United Provinces. He was also the Vice-President of the United Provinces
Legislative Council from 1932 to 1940. In no time he became a major leader
of the Muslim League. His family was very wealthy financially, so he was
also close to the British rulers. (Pakistan PM)
Liaquat Ali Khan
became the first Prime Minister when Pakistan was created. He was shot
dead on October 16, 1951 in a public meeting held in Rawalpindi. Although
the security forces killed the assailant on the spot, they could not save the
Prime Minister. The assailant was an Afghani, so the mystery of Liaquat
Ali Khan's assassination was buried with the death of the assailant. To
this day the government of Pakistan has not been able to find out why its first
prime minister was assassinated?
